Demolition Equipment Safety Checklist for Crews

A demolition job can look under control right up until a worn hose bursts, a poorly matched attachment shifts, or a spotter loses sight of the operator. That is why a demolition equipment safety checklist belongs at the start of every shift, not buried in a binder after the job is underway. The goal is simple: find the problem while the machine is parked, not after it has put a crew, schedule, or structure at risk.

For contractors, safety and uptime are tied together. A machine taken out of service after an incident does not earn. A crew standing by while a replacement attachment is located does not move the project forward. A disciplined inspection process protects people first and helps keep the job running without surprises.

Start With the Jobsite, Not the Machine

Before an excavator, telehandler, skid steer, or attachment starts, the supervisor and operator need a clear read on the work area. Demolition conditions change fast. A wall that was stable at the morning walk-through may not be stable after material is pulled away, rain softens the ground, or traffic moves through the site.

Review the day’s work zone, exclusion zones, travel paths, staging areas, overhead hazards, and known underground utilities. Confirm where trucks will enter, load, turn, and exit. If public traffic, adjacent buildings, or occupied areas are nearby, establish the controls before equipment begins working.

The ground matters as much as the machine. Check for soft shoulders, voids, buried debris, slopes, standing water, and recently disturbed soil. High-reach demolition work, lifting, and heavy attachment use demand stable footing. If ground conditions are questionable, stop and correct them. No production target is worth a rollover or collapse.

Demolition Equipment Safety Checklist Before Startup

A pre-start inspection should be consistent from one shift to the next. Operators know their machines, but familiarity can cause people to overlook small changes. Use the same walk-around sequence so leaks, damage, loose hardware, and wear stand out.

Check the following before the machine goes to work:

  • Inspect hydraulic hoses, fittings, cylinders, and guards for leaks, abrasion, cracking, pinching, or loose connections. Never use a hand to check for a hydraulic leak.
  • Look over the boom, stick, coupler, linkage, pins, bushings, welds, and attachment mounting points for cracks, excessive movement, missing retainers, or damaged hardware.
  • Verify fluid levels, including engine oil, coolant, hydraulic oil, fuel, and DEF where applicable. Watch for contamination, unusual consumption, and puddles beneath the machine.
  • Check tracks or tires, undercarriage components, steps, handrails, mirrors, cameras, lights, alarms, windshield condition, and fire extinguisher access.
  • Test steering, brakes, travel functions, horn, backup alarm, wipers, work lights, gauges, emergency shutoff, and communication equipment before entering the active zone.
  • Confirm that guards, falling-object protection, cab glass, and other protective systems are in place and undamaged for the work being performed.

Document defects and tag out equipment when a condition affects safe operation. That can feel like lost time in the moment. It is far less costly than forcing a machine through the shift and turning a repairable issue into a failure, injury, or major delay.

Attachment Fit Is a Safety Issue

A shear, pulverizer, hammer, grapple, bucket, mulcher, or ripper is not just another tool on the end of the stick. Its weight, hydraulic requirements, mounting dimensions, center of gravity, and working forces change how the carrier behaves.

Confirm the attachment is approved for the machine’s operating weight and hydraulic flow and pressure. Verify the mount, pins, coupler, hoses, and quick-connects are correctly installed and fully secured. Run the attachment through its functions at low speed in a clear area before approaching the work.

Do not assume an attachment that physically fits is properly matched. An oversized attachment can reduce stability and overstress the excavator. A mismatched hydraulic setup can cause poor performance, overheating, hose damage, or uncontrolled movement. Correct setup is part of safe setup.

Protect the Operator’s Work Zone

The operator needs a clean cab, working visibility, and a defined area around the machine. Start by removing loose tools, bottles, debris, and anything that can interfere with pedals or controls. Fasten the seat belt. Adjust mirrors and camera views before moving, not while tracking a truck or swinging near a structure.

Visibility is often the deciding factor in demolition incidents. Dust, low light, blind spots, debris piles, and machine position can hide a laborer in seconds. Use a trained spotter when people, trucks, utilities, or structures are inside the operator’s limited field of view. Establish hand signals or radio channels before work starts, and make sure the operator knows who has authority to call a stop.

Keep ground personnel outside the swing radius and out from under suspended loads, booms, buckets, and attachments. Mark exclusion zones with barriers, signage, or physical separation where practical. The rule has to be firm: no one enters the zone until the operator has stopped, acknowledged them, and made the area safe.

Control Dust, Falling Material, and Hidden Energy

Demolition creates hazards that are not always obvious from the cab. Dust can reduce visibility, affect breathing, and conceal unstable debris. Use the required dust-control measures for the material and site conditions. Water suppression may be necessary, but it also changes ground conditions, so monitor traction and runoff.

Plan for falling material before the first bite. Identify the direction material is expected to travel, maintain a safe standoff distance, and avoid working below unsupported walls, slabs, or loads. Never use a machine to pull a structure in a direction the work plan has not accounted for.

Hidden energy requires the same discipline. Isolate or verify utilities before demolition begins. Check for electrical lines, gas, water, steam, communications, and stored pressure in tanks, pipes, cylinders, and hydraulic systems. If the scope changes or previously unknown utilities appear, stop work and reassess. Guessing around energized or pressurized systems is not an option.

Make Communication Part of the Safety System

The best inspection does not help if the next shift never hears about a developing problem. Operators should report changes in machine performance, unusual noise, heat, vibration, slow hydraulic response, damaged guards, and near misses. Supervisors should pass that information forward during shift changes and before new work phases begin.

A short daily briefing can prevent long, expensive problems. Cover the day’s demolition sequence, equipment assignments, attachment changes, haul routes, weather concerns, exclusion zones, spotter assignments, and emergency procedures. When operators and ground crews know the plan, they can recognize when conditions are drifting away from it.

Emergency readiness should be practical. Know where the fire extinguishers, first-aid supplies, spill materials, emergency contacts, and machine shutoffs are located. Confirm access for emergency responders is not blocked by equipment, debris, or staged materials. A site that is hard to enter during normal operations will be worse during an emergency.

Know When to Stop Work

Experienced crews understand that stopping work is not weakness. It is control. Stop when visibility is lost, a structure behaves unexpectedly, weather creates unsafe footing, an attachment is not operating normally, a person enters the exclusion zone, or communication breaks down.

The right response is to park safely, lower the attachment, secure the machine, and get the right people involved. Some issues call for an operator adjustment. Others require a mechanic, a competent person, an engineer, or a revised demolition plan. The trade-off is clear: a short stop now can prevent a shutdown that lasts days.
