A telehandler that looks clean in the yard can still become the machine that holds up your crew at 7 a.m. Used equipment can be a smart buy, but only when the machine matches the lift, reach, terrain, and daily workload your job demands. This used telehandler buying checklist focuses on what affects uptime, safe operation, and the real cost of putting a machine to work.

Start With the Job, Not the Asking Price

Before inspecting any machine, define what it must do. A telehandler used to unload palletized block on a paved commercial site is a different purchase from one placing trusses, setting forms, handling scrap, or moving material across rough demolition ground.

Start with required lift capacity at the actual working height and forward reach. Capacity ratings fall as the boom extends. A machine advertised as a 10,000-pound telehandler may not safely handle that load at maximum reach. Review the load chart, not just the model badge, and account for the attachment you will run. A carriage and forks, bucket, jib, winch, or work platform all change the working configuration.

Also consider access and transport. Verify overall height, width, machine weight, turning radius, and whether the unit will fit beneath jobsite obstructions or on your trailer. The wrong machine can be affordable on paper and expensive every day it is on the site.

Used Telehandler Buying Checklist: Machine Condition

Verify the machine identity and service history

Begin with the serial number, hour meter, make, model, and year. Make sure the identification plate is present and legible. Compare the information on the machine with the seller’s documentation. Hour meters can be replaced or fail, so operating hours should make sense alongside the seat wear, pedal wear, control wear, tire condition, and overall machine condition.

Service records matter. Ask what preventive maintenance has been completed, when fluids and filters were last changed, and whether major repairs were performed on the engine, transmission, axles, boom, or hydraulic system. A documented repair is not necessarily a problem. In many cases, it is better than an unexplained issue waiting to surface.

Pay attention to gaps in the machine’s history. A low-hour unit that has sat for years may need more attention than a higher-hour machine that was maintained on schedule. Seals dry out, fuel systems suffer, batteries fail, and hydraulic issues can appear after long storage.

Inspect the boom, carriage, and chassis

The boom is where a telehandler earns its keep. Extend and retract it through the full range while watching for hesitation, jerking, unusual noise, or excessive side play. Inspect boom sections for cracks, weld repairs, bent steel, damaged wear pads, and deep scoring. Check the boom pivot points, pins, and bushings for movement beyond normal wear.

Examine the quick-attach carriage, fork frame, and forks closely. Forks should be straight, evenly worn, properly locked in place, and free of unauthorized weld repairs. Inspect fork heel thickness and look for cracks at the heel, where stress concentrates. If the machine will run specialty attachments, confirm the coupler style, hydraulic connections, and rated capacity are correct for that attachment.

Walk around the chassis and look underneath. Check for bent stabilizers, damaged frame components, leaking axle seals, missing guards, and evidence of hard impact. Fresh paint is not automatically a red flag, but it should never replace a close inspection.

Test every hydraulic function

Hydraulic performance separates a job-ready telehandler from a downtime risk. Start the machine cold when possible. Watch for hard starting, excessive smoke, warning lights, or unusual engine noise. Let it warm up, then cycle lift, lower, extend, retract, tilt, frame leveling, steering, and stabilizers if equipped.

Look for slow response, chatter, drifting, or functions that change speed under load. Inspect cylinders, hoses, fittings, valves, and the hydraulic tank area for wetness or active leaks. A little dust around a fitting is one thing. Fresh hydraulic oil running down a boom cylinder is another.

Do not skip a loaded function test. A telehandler may move smoothly with an empty carriage and struggle once it is lifting real weight. Test it within the rated load chart and at the reach you expect to use. Safe, controlled operation is the standard. No shortcuts and no guesswork.

Check steering, drivetrain, and brakes

Drive the unit in every available steering mode. Four-wheel steering, crab steering, and two-wheel steering should engage properly and track as intended. Excessive steering play, popping during turns, or uneven tire scrub can point to worn steering components or alignment issues.

Test forward and reverse travel, transmission shifts, parking brake operation, and service brakes. Listen for axle noise and check for vibration under load. On rough-terrain machines, inspect the axles, hubs, differential areas, and driveshafts for leaks or damaged components.

Tires deserve more than a quick glance. Look for sidewall cuts, mismatched tire sizes, exposed cords, uneven wear, and damaged wheels. Telehandler tires carry significant loads and take abuse on demolition and site-development work. A replacement set can change the true purchase cost fast.

Confirm Safety Equipment Is Working

A telehandler is not just a material mover. It is a lifting machine, and safety systems must be treated that way. Check the seat belt, seat switch, horn, backup alarm, lights, mirrors, wipers, fire extinguisher mount, steps, handholds, and operator’s manual storage.

Make sure the rated capacity limiter or load moment indicator, if equipped, powers on and functions correctly. Inspect the boom angle sensor and warning devices. Verify that the load chart is present, readable, and appropriate for the installed carriage or attachment. If the machine includes outriggers or stabilizers, test their operation and inspect the pads, cylinders, and controls.

Do not accept disconnected alarms, bypassed switches, or missing guards as minor details. Those issues can create a safety exposure before the machine ever reaches a jobsite.

Price the Whole Purchase, Not Just the Unit

The purchase price is only the opening number. Build a realistic ready-to-work cost that includes hauling, taxes where applicable, inspection, fluid service, wear parts, tires, forks, attachments, insurance, and any repairs identified during evaluation.

If the machine is located out of state, factor in the cost and logistics of getting it to your yard or project. A lower-priced telehandler can stop being a deal after transport, necessary repairs, and lost production time. Financing can preserve working capital, but the payment should make sense against the revenue the machine will produce.

Ask whether the seller can provide a current inspection, operating video, maintenance history, and clear terms on what is included. Attachments, extra forks, manuals, spare keys, and transport brackets can add value. So can a dealer that understands setup, delivery, and post-sale support when a project schedule is tight.

Match Attachments to the Machine

Forks may be all you need today, but future work often changes the equation. If you expect to handle buckets, lifting jibs, winches, or work platforms, confirm the telehandler has the right coupler, auxiliary hydraulic capacity, electrical connections, and approved load chart configuration.

Never assume an attachment from another machine will fit or be safely rated. Custom mounts, pins, hydraulic plumbing, and control requirements matter. An attachment that is physically compatible but incorrectly configured can reduce capacity, interfere with machine controls, or create an unsafe lifting condition.
